In favour of egalitarianism. Oslo Lecture in Moral Philosophy: University of Oslo, 20th. August 2009
Non-egalitarians argue that egalitarianism with its central value of equality leads astray, both regarding its ethical foundations and its political implications. Non-egalitarians are convinced that equality has no intrinsic value. In this talk I will defend egalitarianism of a specific kind, i.e. deontological egalitarianism. I shall argue that this kind of egalitarianism is not exposed to the current critique of egalitarianism and discuss its political implications. The Oslo Lecture in Moral Philosopy is an annual event hosted by the Ethics Programme of the University of Oslo, where an internationally known philosopher gives a public lecture on a burning issue of ethical importance. ___________
